1. The Golden Rule: Water vs. Antifreeze

Before we talk brands, let's look at your thermostat. Your choice of co2 laser coolant depends entirely on your shop's operating temperature.

  • Above 41°F (5°C): Stick to pure distilled or purified water. Water has superior thermal conductivity, which keeps your cooling efficiency at its absolute peak. Just remember to change it every 2–3 months!
  • Below 41°F (5°C): It’s time for protection. When winter sets in, you need to mix an antifreeze coolant for laser tube safety into your water tank.

  • Crucial Step: RV antifreeze is a temporary shield. As soon as freezing temperatures are no longer a concern, you must flush the entire system and refill it with fresh distilled water.

3. How to Safely Mix and Circulate Your Coolant

Ready to prep your machine? Don't just pour the fluid in! Follow these simple steps to ensure everything runs smoothly:

Step 1: Power Down & Drain

Turn off your laser machine and your chiller completely. Drain all existing water out of the chiller and take a moment to clean out any built-up limescale.

Step 2: Water First, Then Antifreeze

Always pour your distilled water into the tank first, then add the appropriate amount of antifreeze liquid.

Step 3: Check the Gauge

Before hitting the power switch, double-check that your liquid level reaches the upper limit of the green zone on your chiller's gauge.

Step 4: Circulate

Turn on the chiller only and let the liquid circulate on its own for 5–10 minutes. This ensures a perfect mix. Once that's done, you are ready to fire up the laser and start working!

4. Pro-Tips

Consistency is Key: Pick a brand and stick to it. Even if the main ingredients look identical, different brands use different additive formulas. Mixing them can cause nasty chemical reactions, resulting in weird precipitates or micro-bubbles that disrupt your laser tube's cooling.

Going Out of Town? Drain It! If your shop is going to be sitting unused for an extended period during winter, save yourself a headache and completely drain the water from your laser tube, chiller, and water pipes. Glass laser tubes are incredibly fragile; if water freezes inside them, they will crack. Please note that freeze damage is not covered by warranty!

Spring Cleaning: Antifreeze degrades over time, becoming more corrosive and viscous. When spring rolls around and temperatures stay safely above freezing, flush the system out completely and swap back to pure distilled or softened water.
